Skip the overpriced bags at local fairs and event!
Make your own at home for much less!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup popcorn kernels
- 1/3 cup oil
- 1/4 cup white sugar
Using a large pot with tight-fitting lid, heat oil on medium-high heat. Add kernels. When oil and kernels are sizzling, sprinkle sugar over top. Cover with lid cook, shaking pot back and forth (to prevent burning). When popping sound slows down, remove from heat. Remove extra (un-popped) kernels. Sprinkle with salt. (Do not try to eat the popcorn that may be stuck to the bottom of the pan as soon as you take it off the stove. Severe burn can occur...trust me!)
Bonus tip: If you family loves popcorn, consider picking up a 50# bag at Sam's Club. For less than $17 you can have more than enough to last the entire winter. (Compare to 2# containers that cost more than $4 at mass retailers and 1# boxes of microwave popcorn that can be as much as $5 per box!) Smaller families could consider dividing a bag and sharing the cost. (Divide the bag into 7 or 8 gallon-sized zipper bags.)
