Shopping for Grown-Ups

Purchasing items for the adults on your list can be even more challenging than the children!  Not only will you be attempting to find the perfect gift for each person, you may be tempted to out give someone else.  I encourage you to go back to the budget you set up at the start of this process.  Hold fast to the amount you budgeted for each person, even if you find out the person is giving extravagant gifts this year.  Folks usually appreciate gifts that are wanted or needed, irregardless of the cost.  Use these tips to get the most expensive items you can avoid for the least amount of cash:

  • Suggest "Drawing Names" at the office or with extended family members.  This will limit the number of gifts you give (and get).
  • Watch for wanted or needed items to go on sale
  • Use Retail Coupons (i.e. Kohl’s cash, Bed, Bath & Beyond $5/$15…)
  • Pick up gift certificates at www.restaurant.com (watch for 75% to 80% discount codes)
  • Preview Black Friday deals online http://www.blackfriday.com/
  • Stockpile Free After Rebate (ECB, RR, +UP, Max Perks…) items throughout the year and collect in a “gift” bin
  • Make and print "Gift Certificates" for baby sitting, home-cooked meals or "Dessert of the Month"
  • Create Gift Baskets using FREE or sale-priced items, suggestions include:
    • Movie Theme (DVD, popcorn, sodas and candy)
    • Nail Care (Emery Boards, Nail Polish, Nail Polish Remover, Cotton Balls, etc.)
    • Make Up (Color, brushes, removers, cleaners…)
    • Cold Care (Medicines, Cough Drops, Hand Sanitizer, Tissues…)
    • Hot Beverage (Coffee, tea, mugs, packaged cookies…)
