Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Looking for a simple, tasty treat to share with friends and family this Christmas?  Chocolate Covered Pretzels can be purchased starting at around $2 for a 5 oz bag.  This equals $6.40 per pound.  Consider making these instead.  They are super easy to make and less expensive than bagged varieties.  You will need:

  • Ghirardelli's Candy Making and Dipping Bar ($6.48 for 2.5 # bar at Sam's Club)
  • Pretzels ($6.48 for 6# bag at Sam's = $1.08 per pound OR 12 oz at Dollar Tree = $1.34#)
  • Jimmies and/or colored sugar (not required, but make pretzels more festive, Target One Spot)
  • Cello Bags (Dollar Tree 20 - 25 ct)
  • Waxed Paper
Follow these simple directions:
  1. Line a baking sheet (or a portion of your kitchen counter) with waxed paper.
  2. Melt 1/2 of Ghirardelli Candy Making & Dipping Bar.
  3. Hold one side of pretzel while dipping opposite side in melted chocolate.  (NOTE: only 1/2 of pretzel will be covered in chocolate.  This method is MUCH FASTER than dipping the entire pretzel.)
  4. Allow excess chocolate to drip back into bowl.
  5. Lay pretzel on waxed paper.
  6. Prior to chocolate re-hardening, sprinkle with jimmies or colored sugar.
  7. Allow chocolate to completely harden, then transfer into cello bags.
One Candy Making and Dipping Bar, one bag of Anderson Pretzels at Sam's Club, one package of Dollar Tree cello bags and a single tub of jimmies from the Target One Spot equal $14.96.  These ingredients will yield approximately 5.5# of tasty treats at $2.72 per pound.  You will also have 1/2 bag of pretzels left to munch on (or to dip with an additional Candy Making and Dipping Bar.)
