Virginia Beach
In a little more than two hours you can be basking in the sun, wading in the surf and building castles. Free parking is minimal, so bring some cash. Get directions HERE.
D.C. Zoo
Smithsonian Institute
Folks travel from all over the world to visit here. Whether you're into art, history or space, there's something for you. Limited free parking is available in front of museums. Plan to arrive early and move your vehicle after a few hours. Food is extremely overpriced, so pack your own and/or plan to eat meals on the road. Traffic on I95 will be lighter mid-week. Check out the website HERE.
Air & Space Museum
Technically this museum (and the Metro Zoo) are part of the Smithsonian Institute, but each is at a different location. The larger National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, VA near the Washington Dulles International airport. Aircraft are displayed on three levels. Plan your trip HERE.
Skyline Drive
Colonial Williamsburg, tour Duke of Glouster Street
There's no need to purchase admission tickets to get a taste of the past. Park on side streets and enjoy a stroll down to the Governor's Palace. Visit the vegetable stand, outdoor market, Parish Church graveyard and more. Kids will enjoy looking at the horses (watch your step) and trying out the shackles. Head to Merchant's walk to peruse the bookstore, try out the games in the toy store and splurge on a little treat in the candy store. Details HERE. (Note: Williamsburg also has outlet stores, pair this fun trip with shopping if you are in need of back-to-school items. Shop wisely, not all items are a great deal. Get coupons HERE.)
I hope these ideas add a little fun to your summer break!
For $10, obtain an entrance pass valid for up to 7 days. Enjoy scenic mountain views and cooler temperatures. Food options are almost non-existent, so a picnic is a must-have! View park details HERE. (Note: Disabled citizens are entitled to a Golden Pass, valid for free admission to all national parks for life. Seniors may purchase a lifetime pass for $10. Details for both are HERE.) All national parks will have FREE admission on September 24 (Public Lands Day).
Admission is free! Limited free parking is available, however these spots are further from the entrance. (Parking lot is available and runs $15 - $20, depending on the length of your stay.) If heading to D.C., it's best to plan a mid-week trip to avoid heavy traffic on I95. Visit the website HERE. Don't forget to pack the stroller! (NOTE: The Richmond Metro Zoo is smaller and requires admission. A family of 5 could spend $50+ just to get into the gate.)
