Bread Heels...What to do?

I hate to throw out any food, including those dry ends on every loaf of bread we buy.  I've heard of folks who actually like these, but none have ever lived in this house!  If your family as is finicky as mine, try these tips:
  • Flip It--As preschoolers, my kids never noticed that their peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese sandwich included a heel.  All bread slices have two sides, use the "normal" side as the outside of the sandwich!
  • Cut It--Running low on hamburger buns?  Cut a big circle out of two heels and viola, instant hamburger bun!  (Just don't let your kids see you doing the cutting!)
  • Chop It--Toast the heels, allow them to cool them then run through a food processor or chopper.  Store in the freezer and use anytime a recipe calls for "bread crumbs".
  • Bake It--Into croutons that is.  Use the recipe HERE.
  • Save It--Throw heels (and the bag these came in) into the freezer.  Add more as these become available.  Before heading to the park, grab your stash.  (Chop slices on a cutting board and return to bag, if your children are too little to break up whole pieces.)  The ducks and geese will thank you!
Use these tips to avoid tossing bread heels and to save some of the bread in your wallet!
